Bowman Park Junior Camp

Juniors entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades this fall or ages 9, 10 or 11 are invited to participate in the 7-day camping program. (Those entering seventh grade this fall have the option of attending either youth or junior camp, but not both).

Evening services during Junior Camp begin at 7 p. m. Messages geared to adults and junior campers will be featured in the hour-long services.

History of the Bowman Park Junior Camp

A new venture was successfully inaugurated in 1964 when the first Junior Camp was held at Bowman Park, July 31-August 2. Because this was a new step in the Camp program, it was felt that a weekend camp would be sufficient to

test the worth of the project. Rev. Sterling A. Fake was the Director of the first Junior Camp. There were 42 registrants the first year and the full camp program included worship, study and recreation.

The Camp in 1965 was held July 30 through August lst. The fee was held at $6.00 as in the first year, with Rev. Fake again directing the activities.

Although there was much consideration given to extending the camp to a full week, the 1966 Camp continued as a weekend venture, with Rev. Karl Keller of Barnesville as Director, due to the hospitalization of Rev. Fake. Under advisement by the Board of Associates, it was decided that the Camp in 1967 would extend from Sunday, July 30, through noon of Saturday, August 5th. Co-Directors that year were Mrs. A. M. Herman and Miss L-Louise Herman.

Rev. L. E. Rau has been serving as Director of the Junior Camp since 1968, with his wife as the Registrar. Mrs. Violet Leibenguth taught the Bible Class from 1968 through 1989. The class in Christian applications had in the last several years been taught by Mrs. Barbara Harder. Crafts have been under the direction of Mrs. Mary Ann Repsher.

Area pastors have been very supportive of the Junior Camp over the last 43 years of the Junior Camp, sending their junior age children to Bowman Park and serving as teachers. In 1975 the evangelistic emphasis was stimulated through the services of The Reverend Kenneth Weaver, the first Evangelist secured for this purpose. Evening services have been held for the Junior Campers since that time, sometimes with adults participating and attending. Former youth campers have served as counselors at Junior Camp.
